Sources and data notes

This directory uses the TrafficChallan RTO Codes Open Data, updated 2026-11-01, under CC BY 4.0 with attribution to TrafficChallan. The compilation includes 36 states and Union Territories and 1,336 code mappings. Attribution: TrafficChallan. Read the dataset documentation and verification notes.

Verification is not uniform. The dataset says some state lists were fully checked against an official source and others were sampled; pages repeat the method and references so you can judge the coverage. We separately checked Maharashtra against its 2026 office directory and Jharkhand against its official district code list on 2026-11-03. Check the state department for current operating status before relying on a listing.

How registration codes are structured

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways — Central Motor Vehicles Rules, Rule 50 ↗ describes the state code and registering-authority code as parts of a registration mark. Formats and special series can vary.

Limitations

Office labels are short search descriptions; they can reflect historical, statewide, or proposed mappings. A source being listed as official does not mean it was recently updated, and our review date is not government certification. This site is not a government service and does not look up vehicle owners or records.
